As part of its continued communication efforts, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced an update to the Compassionate Allowances List. Over the years, the list has continued to experience steady growth, and on August 11 the agency published 14 new additions, increasing its total to more than 300 conditions. SSA’s newest update further reinforces the agency’s favorable portrayal of its efforts to transform the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program.

SSA has shared that the goal of the Compassionate Allowances List is to reduce disability determination wait times for individuals living with severe disabilities by identifying certain medical conditions that, by definition, meet the agency’s standards for disability benefits. These diagnoses range from certain cancers and brain disorders to rare diseases and various other medical conditions.

In their statement, SSA communicated that adding more conditions to the list will result in an accelerated SSDI program. The agency also addressed their support for individuals living with these conditions, sharing that this initiative allows SSA to deliver services to them much quicker. Although, most, if not all conditions being added are extremely rare, and conditions where benefits should be granted in a timely manner whether a list is established or not.

On top of this update, SSA’s recent communications have featured other developments that are reportedly streamlining their services. In late July, one of the notable updates announced pertains to the SSDI program, as the agency highlighted that new digital tools have been made available to disability claimants. Ultimately, the additions to the Compassionate Allowances List and recently introduced digital tools have both been recognized as enhancements to the SSDI program. As a result, SSA has claimed the program is actively improving, becoming stronger and more efficient for all. Along with these developments to the SSDI program, SSA has shared more on the Supplemental Security Income program and other customer service initiatives that are said to be contributing to the agency’s overall improvements.
